‘there came upon me in the night a quiet’

‘A curious drawing appeared one day inside my musings.  It kept reappearing.  I did not know at first what it was, this lyre with the strings that have no end. A poem soon followed. So it began, sometimes a drawing came first, sometimes a poem, with the unfathomable always close by. The journey of a book became a book of a journey.’

This book of poems with drawings was recently launched with an exhibition at Rhiannon Gallery in Tregaron including original crayon/pencil drawings, glass sculptures and poetry readings.

Below are some of my favourites with extracts to give a flavour of how they begin. Also you can hear me reading some of them on my youtube channel

air

‘nothing more strange than living inside
the wild unshaped nourishment of air
this angel of no fixed abode
trekking continuously across
the globe with tribes of clouds and winds
pitching tents here and there like scents
honeysuckle feelings rosemary
musings minty questionings from
who knows where …….’

the gate

‘I came across a shiny white
gate standing in a field all alone
with grass growing high around it
no fence no boundary in sight
no reason to be there
no reason to use it
I opened its latch and passed through
going nowhere …….’

along the brecon canal

‘I am called
by the light and shade to
move with it along the canal to join its floating
awareness
through mud pink clouds of shining
lights, deep rose brown shade of sycamores, with flecks of
blue sky as
they appear inside the
black dots of leaves that stir with the oh so quiet
breeze, …….’

the apple tree

‘I once had a hidden orchard
brambles more brambles up to the
sky in the autumn I cut my
way through to the thrilling steps going
nowhere it was there that I saw
the apple trees
a great joy for I knew their kind
they had taught me to draw when young
this gathering of elders…....’

there came upon me

‘there came upon me in the night a quiet
that did not sink but stretched its gaze
long and slow through the hollows of my
getting old and dying to a
lighter opening place …….’

an ark of a dream

‘the looping shape of an ark born of a
child’s imagination
the tail of a fish the head of a bird
a cradle floating in
the open sea with prayers and candles and
dreams that fly lovingly
charmed for a safe passage through to the land
of the millions of years …….’

ynyslas ramblings

‘I am filling my rucksack with pink stones
orange shells seaweed necklaces and
feathers black and white very large
very small each a different design
I hold a tiny one in my hand
touching its edge with my lips
could this be a way to talk to God
a kind of microphone? ..…..’

the eucalyptus

‘on a hot summer’s day cicadas
singing loud I fell asleep under
the eucalyptus tree
I dreamt I spoke the language
of gum tree bark telling the story
of my life with patches of
cinnamon turquoise orange
next to a lavender grey
I shredded it …….’

a rhyming air

‘I imagine when I breathe in
the air also breathes in me adding
to the gradients of meaning
deposited long ago inside
its invisible soil
sentiments sedimented
in layers of breathing time
as I walk through the ancient woods
I hear lyrical murmurings…..’

a line

‘there is a line that draws itself between
a mountain and a lake an original
and a reflection an experience
and a recollection
the mirror’s edge between
an unshaped potency and a new imagining
a line that sings with living current
like a wire conducting its messages
to and fro …….’
